What to Write in Any Card

We all want to be there for our people, whether they’re celebrating a big win or enduring a loss. And when we can’t be there in person, we send something meaningful: a handwritten note, flowers (maybe even a care package from Small Packages!). But what happens in the moment when you sit down to actually write the card? You want to say something heartfelt, but sometimes the words just don’t arrive.

Not to worry: we’ve got you covered. Read on for what to write in any card, whether it’s for a happy occasion or something more serious.

Small Packages cards, designed in-house.

What to write in a Holiday Card to a co-worker/boss:

“Happy Holidays! This has been quite a year, but through it all, I’ve been grateful to be working [for/with] someone like you. Thank you for your [energy/creativity/thoughtfulness]. I can’t wait to see what we accomplish next year!”

What to write in a Holiday Card to a friend:

“Happy Holidays! Every year, around this time, I count the great things in my life. You are always on that list. The[sense of calm/enthusiasm/love] that you bring to our friendship is so important to me, and I get such joy from being around you, even in a year as nuts as this one. I’m so grateful for our bond, and I can’t wait to go on real adventures with you in 2021.”

What to write in a sympathy card:

“I am so sorry for your loss. [Name] was a wonderful person, and I know they loved you so much. I remember [fill in a sweet or funny memory about the person who passed].

I wish I could make your pain disappear. Please know that I’m here for anything you need, whether it’s running errands, reliving fun memories, or just being silent together.”

What to write to someone going through a break-up:

“I am so sorry you’re in pain. We never know the inner workings of another person’s relationship, but here’s what I do know: you are worthy of love, and you will find it again.

In the meantime, it’s okay to feel awful. It’s also okay to call me whenever you want, so I can tell you what a brilliant, kind, beautiful human being you are. I feel lucky to have you in my life, and I can’t wait to see what magic this next chapter holds for you.”

What to write in a “congrats on your promotion!” card:

“Congratulations! I’m so excited (and not at all surprised) that you’ve reached this new goal. Your hard work and creativity are such an inspiration to everyone around you, and you deserve this success SO much.

I hope you take some time to celebrate this achievement, and I can’t wait to see what you accomplish next.”

What to write to someone who’s welcoming a new baby:

“Congratulations! I am so thrilled to welcome [Baby’s Name] to the world. [He/she] is so lucky to have you as a [mother/father/parent], and to be born into a home so full of love.

You’re going to be just as amazing at this new role as you are at everything else. I’m wishing you tons of joy and very few late nights. Here’s to the start of the best adventure!”

What to write in a Thank You card:

“Thank you so much for [xxx]. It was so incredibly helpful because [xxx].

I appreciate your kindness so much, and am so grateful to have such a supportive, loving friend.”

What to write in a Birthday card:

“Happy Birthday!! I hope you know this every day, but this one’s a particularly great day to say it: I am so grateful to have you in my life. You are brilliant, beautiful, and kind, and any room is always more fun with you in it.

I hope you take some time today to relax and take care of yourself. You deserve it! I can’t wait to see all the incredible things this next year brings you.”

What to write in an Engagement Card:

“Congratulations! I’m so excited that you and [fiancé(e)] have made it official. Your love for each other is so clear, and [He/she/they] is such a lucky [guy/girl/person] to spend the rest of their life with someone as wonderful as you.

Here’s to a lifetime of happiness with the person you love! I couldn’t be more thrilled for you. Can’t wait for all the celebrations to come.”

What to write in a Housewarming card:

“Congratulations on your new home! This is such an exciting step. Here’s to a new chapter that will be full of great memories, and hopefully not *too* many trips to IKEA.”

What to write in a Bridesmaid Proposal card:

“You’ve been by my side for all the important things in life, like [x, y, and z]. Will you please stand beside me for this one, too?”

What to write in a Get Well card:

“I’m so sorry you’re sick. I wish I could wave a magic wand and make you feel 100%, but until I develop that power, I’m sending you tons of love and good energy instead. Please take care of yourself and rest up; you’re so important to so many people (especially me)!”

There you have it! There’s no one size fits all sentiment for these occasions, but sometimes you just need to get the creative juices flowing. Here’s to the art of the handwritten card, and letting people know how much we care about them.

(P.S. If you want someone else to do the actual handwriting, and pick out the perfect gift for any occasion…try Small Packages!)
